Grading

Aerating

The problem starts with the particles in the top 4 inches of the soil that is compressed. Compressed soils restrict the number of nutrients, fertilizers & airflow to the roots of the lawn. This stresses the grass & makes it less able to compete with weeds & slows the recuperation from injury. Compacted lawns are more likely to have thatch problems. Aerating will benefit your lawn by loosening compact soils allowing in more water & nutrients. Increases oxygen levels to the roots stimulating root growth. Your lawn needs 16 different nutrients to survive but the soil usually provides most of them. You usually see 3 numbers on a bag of fertilizer like 30-10-10 which are Nitrogen ( first # ), phosphorus ( second # ) & Potassium ( third 3). So all you really need is 3 main one's which are Nitrogen, Phosphorus & Potassium which are all critical in having a beautiful lawn. Nitrogen is the most important ingredient you could add because it is the ingredient that makes your grass grow & get its green color. It also creates thickness, shoot density & sturdy growth to fight off weeds & pests. Phosphorus is used to encourage strong grass root growth. It is mostly used in new lawns & renewing old lawns. Potassium is used to enhance your lawn's resistance to disease, drought, wear & cold weather. It is increased during fall & winter fertilization & times of new planting & renewal of old lawns.
